Obituary of Joanne Marie Callander

Joanne Marie Callander-Smith, 74, of Payette passed away Nov. 13, 2021 at home. Joanne was born July 23, 1947 in San Jose, CA to Calvin and Lavelle Callander. When she was 17 she was baptized in the Catholic Church. After graduating high school in 1965 she married David Farley; in 1969, after almost four years they had their first child in Germany. They moved back home in 1971 and one year later had twins. Moving to Las Vegas, NV briefly, to be closer to her sister she started college to study Architecture and Engineering. Working as a Drafter and designer in Engineering for several years, in 1990 Joanne went to work teaching at a prison. During this time Joanne and David divorced after 27 years of marriage. In 1994, Joanne married Richard Smith. The next several years they worked on improving their home and two acres, started a wedding video business, and met many new friends while RV traveling. Joanne excelled at her job and received the teacher of the year award for 1998-1999, retiring in 2004. As Christ become more central in their lives, they started attending the Saints Francis and Clare Secular Franciscan meetings and found a family. Getting more involved with the church they sold their travel trailer and used the money to take a trip to the Holy Land and Europe. Joanne and Richard moved to Idaho in 2019 after losing their home to the "Camp Fire" near Paradise, CA in November 2018. Joanne was a loving wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother, who loved jewelry making, interior decorating, gardening, RV travel and many friends. A devoted catholic who was a professed Secular Franciscan, church bulletin editor, Eucharistic Minister, and home visiting ministry. Her many achievements include Architectural Drafting, Design Drafting, Teacher of the Year Award, California Teaching Credential - Vol. Ed., Voc. Drafting and Computer Aided Drafting Teacher. She is preceded in death by her parents Calvin and Lavelle Callander; brother, Gerald Lee Callander; a son Derrill Lee Farley; and step son-in-law Ted Harris. Joanne is survived by her husband Richard Smith; a son Dwayne Farley (Lisa); a daughter Dawna Farley Thurber (Cris); a sister Judith Callander; stepchildren Randy Smith (Pam) and Wendy Harris-Smith; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren; four nieces; and former husband David Farley. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Fruitland. Joanne will be placed, at a later date, at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Nampa ID.
